Free guidance published to help firms win tenders

Small firms can get advice on winning public sector contracts following the publication of a free guide to preparing tenders by procurement consultants Ways2Win.

The guidance on the website includes tips on what businesses should include in a tender, as well as links to further support and training.

According to Ways2Win managing director Wendy Wills, small firms often miss out on public sector contracts due to a lack of confidence and planning.

“Public sector contracts can add critical new business streams to those businesses which take advantage of them,” she said. “However, all too often businesses, particularly small firms, think they are not fit for purpose and shy away from tendering.

“It is true that businesses need to prepare themselves and get tender fit – but done properly this is a wise investment and can reap real rewards,” added Wills.

Ways2Win’s top tips for businesses tendering for public sector contracts include:

• Ensure you prepare sufficiently before submitting your first tender – you will be asked about your standards and policies on issues ranging from HR and the environment, to finances.

• Find out as much as you can about the specific tender process and expectations so they don’t surprise you along the way. If you are given the opportunity to ask questions, do so.

• Put yourself in the shoes of the person reading the document, and think about what they will want to read and what will make you stand out. Keep it short and relevant.
