Funding for Training

Training should be done for a clear business benefit and be able to self-fund, with the improvements in business performance outweighing the cost.

However, the training budgets of many SME’s are very low and being able to signpost to funding can make the difference between the training being completed and not.

In the vast majority of cases the value of training can be seen immediately, but having access to funding can help overcome the initial objections.

Within Scotland there are many and varied sources of funding and they vary enormously between geographic areas and occupational sectors. The main support for training in employment comes through funded programmes such as Modern Apprenticeships and Skillseekers; however this is currently aimed at young people entering employment for the first time and has historically been targeted at 16-24 year olds, although some areas have provided support for over 25’s. This can support the business by encouraging workplace training in the form is SVQ’s, but doesn’t help with workforce development other than SVQ’s.

In regard to funding for staff development outwith this age range there is a great variation in what is available with some geographic areas having strong workforce development programmes whilst others are scarce. This can encompass European Structural Funded projects, Local Economic Forum projects, Sector Skills Council projects to name but a few. Many of these will have location, occupation or age restrictions based on the target group.

To try to keep abreast of everything that is available is very difficult but by having a network of training partners across Scotland we are able to look at every businesses needs then look for any funding that is appropriate. To make an appointment with your local training partner please click here
